  ZUMAIA, GETARIA AND ZARAUTZ

The coast of Gipuzkoa is the place where wilderness and the natural environment are the main attractions, from the cliffs of Zumaia to the rat shaped peninsula of Getaria this trip includes everything.

ZUMAIA

The history of Zumaia dates all the way back to 1292, the year when the historians agree that  villa emerged around the Monastery of Santa Maria. Initially, the people of Zumaia lived in the nearby valley next to the water. However,  frequent pirate attacks prompted them to build a walled and fortified villa where they could defend themselves collectively against the enemy.

Hermitage of San Telmo

Located next to Itzurun Beach and on the cliff formed by the Flysch, this small hermitage became famous after appearing in the movie "8 Apellidos Vascos". The  hermitage, dedicated to the patron saint of  sailors, has an ideal location overlooking the sea. From there, you can see rock formations and cliffs that are over 60 million years old.

Cliff of Itzurun and Flysch

The famous Flysch of Zumaia can be seen at low tide. This peculiar phenomenon changes the appearance of the entire beach as it reveals an abrasion surface formed by the erosion of the sea, consisitng of different layers of limestone and sandstone rocks. People patiently wait until the afternoon, when the water is low enough to make the stones visible.

St. Peter's Church

The impressive tower of the Church of San Pedro is the most outstanding element of the urban area of Zumaia. We can still see that the church is shaped as a watchtower and that was because it actually used to be a watchtower, because from the top you can see to both sides in the sea. The church was and remains the center of the city and is the only place where we can still see some remains of the walls of Zumaia.
