MADRID
Madrid is one of Europe’s most historically rich cities. Its documented history traces back to the 9th century, but the area in fact has been inhabited by humans since prehistoric times. Originally named Mayrit, the city of Madrid was founded by Emir Muhammad at the close of the 9th century A.D. The city came to prominence during the Arab occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, but passed into Christian hands during the Reconquest of Spain by the Christians. To this day, it remains one of the most important capitals in Europe.
TOLEDO
The city of Toledo might be small, but its history and beauty are not. In the Gothic period and until 1560, Toledo was the capital of Spain, just before Madrid became the capital. Walking through the city is like going back in time and landing in the Middle Ages because its medieval architecture is amazing. Toledo is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the world, and the wall surrounding the city is still intact. During medieval times, these walls kept out every enemy, and if that wasn't enough, the fierce warriors of the city would do it.
