BAYONNE
Bayonne was awarded the French distinction « Town of Art & History » in 2012.
Historically, Bayonne is also known as the French capital of chocolate and is famous worldwide for its ham. The city’s cathedral has been inscribed on the the UNESCO World Heritage list because for hundreds of years it has been a stop on the Way of St. James pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
You will definitely fall in love with the old town of this small, but precious city. Bayonne also boasts the most complete Basque Museum where you can learn everything about the Basque culture.
The town has a long and colourful history. It was an important stop on the coastal pilgrimage route from France to Santiago de Compostela. Piracy, supported by the French King, further contributed to the town's wealth and many of the grand houses in the town were built from the proceeds of this piracy. It is still rumored that there are hidden pirate treasures in the surroundings of the city. Nowadays, it is a very popular summer resort, and its beach attracts thousands of tourists every year.
